Postcard Year-End Poll 2007

For the 2007 poll, we shortened the deadline just a touch, and with some prodding, we received 133 'official' (134 total) ballots - one less than last year. You folks voted for a new high total of 356 different releases, beating last year's mark which was around 335.

Perhaps due to the voting being spread out even thinner this year, only the top 13 albums cracked the 100 point mark as opposed to the top 15, as has been the case for the past several years. And the idea of when (and where) an album is released is going to continue to cause issues in the future. This week, the physical version of Radiohead's In Rainbows was released stateside, so there's a good chance it will receive a lot of votes in 2008. As for 2007, see the note below in the stats roundup about You Am I's impressive 91 point total this year.

The top album this year appeared on 41% of the ballots, but, as many people observed, the race was extremely tight until the last few days. The top two albums each received 7 first place votes, but four other albums received 6 first place votes. In a year where Wilco and Son Volt both released albums, and the Postcard public reception to both albums was perhaps more mixed than releases in past years, many lurking and non-lurking voters still found a place for Jeff and Jay's projects in their lists, although, according to my records, Son Volt did not receive any #1 votes - I am going to guess this a first.

Incidentally, all errors, miscalculations, mistakes are all my own. If you're really upset by any perceived inequities here - relax - it's a music poll...

Back to the top 10 - If you had a smile on your face with Buffalo Tom on the list right in the middle, you're probably overjoyed with Dinosaur Jr's very strong Top 10 finish. The National and Arcade Fire make return trips near the top of the poll, and Postcard's love for Two Cow came through this year louder than ever. And though Radiohead grabbed a lot more ink, Glossary's bold and generous move put their work in the hands of many appreciative Postcarders instantly. Aside from the winner, Glossary received the most votes in this year's poll and a Top 5 finish. If you liked what you heard, head to a digital download site (make sure it's safe!) or your local indie store and order something by the band, or try to catch them next time they swing through your town. Well done, Todd.

As you can see above, Okkervil River finished second overall through the second tiebreak with the extra #1. Z's ballot would have altered the order of the Top 10 slightly - so by all means, make sure to whip up a ballot next year.
